ULYSSES GRANT MAKEOVER

New York Times
By John Files
September 29, 2004

The Treasury Department is circulating a redesigned $50 bill in an effort to make counterfeiting more difficult. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which is responsible for paper currency, said 140 million bills had been printed. The new bill is the same size and still features Ulysses S. Grant, but has red and blue background colors and includes embedded threads that glow when exposed to ultraviolet light and ink that changes from a copper color to green when the bill is tilted. Because counterfeiting techniques change quickly, the government intends to change the design of some bills every 7 to 10 years. John Files (NYT)
